Dementia Caregiving as Main Responsibility

We are a family of three – elderly parents and their adult son living together. We are looking for a live-in helper whose main responsibility is caring for my elderly father who has dementia.

This position is especially suitable for someone who genuinely enjoys elderly caregiving more than household work, and finds satisfaction in developing a good relationship with the person she cares for.

My mother is relatively independent and does not require regular hands-on personal care. The role also includes preparing simple meals and general household duties, but my father's caregiving remains the main priority.

The qualities most important to us are genuine compassion, patience, attentiveness and self-initiative.

My father can sometimes become confused, refuse assistance, shout or become angry for reasons that are not immediately apparent. We need someone who can remain patient and calm even in difficult situations.

You should be alert and responsive to his requests and signs of discomfort, and attend to him promptly when he needs help rather than unnecessarily making him wait. You should also be observant, communicate well with the family, and take initiative instead of waiting to be instructed about everything.

Being present and attentive is very important. Mobile phone use during working hours is NOT allowed except for emergencies.

If you mainly enjoy housekeeping or prefer a job where you simply complete assigned tasks, this position is probably not suitable for you.

Language: Ideally Cantonese; otherwise, sufficient Mandarin to understand and communicate with my parents in everyday situations.
