Clarissa Mae

I am Clarissa Mae, 37 years old, and living here in the Philippines. I have worked here for 3 years and 2 months as a helper and 5 months in Hong Kong as a domestic helper.

My first time in Hong Kong was a huge test of my strength. I worked very long hours, handling heavy physical tasks and meticulous cleaning every day. Even though I was dedicated, that contract ended early because of a misunderstanding about my personal hygiene on my rest day. Though it was a difficult time, I used that experience to become more resilient.

When the pandemic hit, I stayed in the Philippines and worked for a family for four years (2019–2023). I cared for two young children: a 1-year-old baby boy and his 3-year-old sister who has autism. Looking after a child with special needs while also caring for a baby taught me extreme patience and how to follow strict routines.

After my caregiving years, I started a small local food business and did some online selling. It wasn't a big business, just enough to provide for myself every day, but it taught me how to handle a budget and solve problems independently.
