My name is Kenneth Joy. I’m 41 years old, happily married, and a father of three. I have worked for 6 years in Singapore caring for a child with cerebral palsy and paralysis, who had also had a liver transplant. My day would start at 6 a.m., where I’d begin with feeding through a PEG tube and keeping an eye out for any vomiting. By 8 a.m., I’d prepare milk and eight different medications, change diapers, dress the child, and brush his teeth. Then, I’d get him into his wheelchair and play nursery rhymes for some sensory stimulation.
My mornings were filled with feeding, giving medication, and doing physiotherapy sessions. After that, I’d get the child ready for school. I took care of hygiene, helped with any constipation issues, and packed everything needed for aqua therapy. Our trip to school involved bus rides and some walking, and his classes went from 1:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. During the breaks, I’d feed him, change his diapers, and if I had a moment, I’d try to rest a bit myself.
Evenings were about feeding him again, bathing him with warm water, and getting him settled for bedtime. I also worked alongside the parents, who had an infant daughter and helped with meals. Saturdays were for a little jogging or napping, while Sundays I used as my day off. My job really needed constant care, compassion, and a commitment to making sure the child was happy and healthy.
