Experienced Caregiver for elderly

Patient is an elderly man who is bedridden. He is mentally alert and wants to hire a 2nd Indonesian maid to help with his care and household work. At present, he is cared for by a team of night shift hospital nurses. Immediate and extended family, Singaporean caregivers, physiotherapists and Indonesian maid

Job Requirements for 2nd Indonesian Maid 1) Below 35 years old 2) Above 1.55m 3) Above 55kg 4) Able to cook 5) Hungry to learn new caregiving skills. Prior caregiver experience or elder care experience is not required. The maid’s willingness to learn is most important. The hospital nurses, local caregivers, physiotherapists and family members are very capable of providing the necessary caregiver training required for the job. 6) Accept 1 rest day per month 7) Willingness to cover night shift work—(Approximately 8pm to 8am—excluding meal times and subject to changes in the patient’s caregiving schedule to hospital appointments, physiotherapy sessions etc. The night shift maid will start her night shift on Monday night and finish her last night shift on Saturday night. She will change shift with the day shift maid on Sunday and begin her day shift on Sunday afternoon. The night shift nurse will usually be present to bridge the gap in the maid’s schedule and facilitate the transition. 8) Night shift maid will be given 8 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleeping time in her room during the day time. She will have the room to herself while the day shift maid is working. 9) Night shift maid has to stay awake at night (because she is given uninterrupted sleeping time during the day). Maid needs to drink coffee/ red bull to stay awake to care for patient because patient is fully paralyzed. 10) Maid will share room with another Indonesian maid 11) Maid cannot use handphone during work hours 12) Maid should speak basic conversational English in order to communicate with the China and Indian nurse

Household Information Family comprises 3 working adults and 1 bedridden and paralyzed ah gong. No babies, children or pets. Family has plants and fish. Family lives in a 5-room HDB. The house has washer and dryer. Maid hand-washes some clothes and does ironing of work clothes.

Information about night shift caregiver team At present, night shift nurses take turns to cover 12 hour night shift every night. In the event that nurse is absent due to sickness etc, patient’s son takes over night shift duty. New maid will shadow and train with the night shift nurse or family member until she becomes capable of caring for the patient independently. The current Indonesian maid (who has no caregiver experience) has been trained to take care of the patient alone at night Night shift maid does not cook any meals. She prepares simple breakfast consisting of bread, coffee and tea in the morning.

Information about day shift caregiver team At present, there are local Singaporean male caregivers who come in everyday from 1pm to 9pm. Their main job is to carry the patient from bed to toilet, bed to wheelchair and bed to hospital. The maid’s job is to support the 2-men transfer (heavy lifting done by the males)—maid’s job is to assist to ensure stability when the 2 male caregivers carry the patient to the wheelchair. The male physiotherapist also goes to the patient’s house 4 times per week. Each physiotherapy session lasts about 3 to 4 hours. While the local male caregiver or physiotherapists is caring for the patient, the maid needs to be cooking or do housework. She has more than enough time to finish her cooking and house work. Job Description 1) Household work—cooking meals, cleaning and general household work. Maid will do house work when the physiotherapist or caregiver is taking care of the patient 2) Provide elder care for patient during working hours (showering, toileting, diaper change, massage, simple range of motion exercises) 3) Cover night shift duty (around 8pm to 9am)—help the patient with toileting, massage, showering, simple exercises, diaper change and other elder care needs) 4) Maid cooks meals during day shift—she changes shift with the night shift maid at the end of each week
